Who is the modern man? A question - if not the question - of our time.
Modern masculinity is in a bit of a crux. Even the wokest of men is confused about their role in society. Do they have feelings? Are they allowed to show those feelings? If you’re straight or bi, what’s your actual role in a relationship with a woman?
How are you supposed to react if your girlfriend makes more money than you? How are you supposed to react if she doesn’t?
Can you actually be sexist if you don’t mean to be? Can you communicate at work with a woman without ending up in HR?
How are you supposed to be a vulnerable, nurturing father to your children and ‘just one of the guys’ at a football game?
If its cool to be gay, can you be openly gay at work?
These are questions that plague the modern man, because the modern man is in the middle of a paradoxical existential crises. He is supposed to be sensitive yet stoic. Manly yet vulnerable. Aware of his privilege yet never panders. According to a New York Times article, the modern man has…
… never “pinned” a tweet, and he never will.
The modern man has hardwood flooring. His children can detect his mood from the stamp of his Kenneth Cole oxfords.
People aren’t sure if the modern man is a good dancer or not. That is, until the D.J. plays his jam and he goes out there and puts on a clinic.
Jokes aside, the modern man is many things. But with the emergence of both positive and negative groups focused on the male identity, one thing is strikingly clear - most modern men are very much in the middle of a confusing process in figuring out who they are, and what their role is in the world.
That’s why Spinster is creating a program to give male entrepreneurs, creatives and community builders an empowering space to figure out some of the very core questions about their masculine identity. In order to help us create this awesome program, we need some insights from the men in your life.
